The City of Newark will begin collecting leaves on the second Monday of October and continue through the end of December. In order to improve the service, neighborhoods will no longer have assigned days of the week for collection. Instead, trucks will continuously route through the city during the season. Residents are encouraged to rake leaves into piles (no bagging) to the grassy area between the sidewalk and curb at their convenience. Residents should expect collection once per week during the beginning of the season and once every other week during peak season.
Where to rake the leaves for collection? Leaves should be raked into a pile located on the space between the sidewalk and the curb. Pleasedo not rake leaves onto the street or curb.
Is this service for leaves only? Leaves only. Mixing gravel/rocks, sticks or brush with leaves may damage collection machinery.
What about street parking? Please park vehicles in your driveway or well away from leaf piles during the collection season. Leaves obstructed by vehicles cannot be collected.
Did you know?
1. Using your lawnmower to mulch the leaves is a great way to enrich your soil and improve next season's lawn!
2. Remember your yard waste cart is great for fallen leaves! Even after the city-wide Green Wednesday collection ends the first week of October, you may still call the Department of Public Works and Water Resources to request a scheduled Wednesday yard waste collection.
If you have any questions regarding the Leaf Collection Program, please call the Department of Public Works and Water Resources at 302/366-7000.
