Goals & Philosophy

Goals

The academy has established four goals:
  • To allow the cadets to gain a new perspective on what it's like to be a law enforcement officer.
  • To familiarize the cadets in the operations of the Newark Police Department and to experience some of the everyday tasks.
  • To have the cadets experience some of the training that a law enforcement officer receives.
  • To offer the cadets a historical, present day, and future perspective of the law enforcement and emergency services profession.

Philosophy

The academy’s philosophy focuses on the creation of a disciplined learning environment through:

Environment Characteristics
  • Where candid and open dialogue is appreciated.
  • Where the treatment of others with respect and tolerance is the standard.
  • Where we understand that law enforcement officers and emergency services personnel live by a set of values and may be called upon to make the "supreme sacrifice" in the line of duty.

Code of Conduct

The academy adheres to a strict code of conduct, which is best described as being "paramilitary."

Dress Code

We also have a dress code that must be followed. One of the reasons for this is to create a realistic Police Academy atmosphere, which is professional in its appearance.
