January 25, 2018 - On Wednesday January 24, 2018 at
approximately 4:00 p.m., members of the Newark Police Department Street Crimes
Unit were conducting surveillance in the area of Todd Estates, Newark. Officers
assigned to that unit had obtained an arrest warrant for Shane Scott, charging
him with one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited.
While conducting surveillance, Scott was located in a Ford
F150 pickup truck at the McDonald’s restaurant at the corner of Route 4 and
Harmony Road. An officer in an unmarked police vehicle pulled up behind Scott
with his emergency lights activated, as several other officers converged on
foot toward the vehicle.
Scott immediately fled in the vehicle, driving over a grass
embankment, a sidewalk and then a curb onto westbound Route 4 at a high rate of
speed. As Scott approached Route 4 and Prides Crossing, he recklessly
maneuvered the vehicle over another curb and a pedestrian island, losing
control of the vehicle, where he then struck a 2002 Toyota Solara. The F150
flipped several times and came to rest on its roof in a grass median.
Scott was able to exit the vehicle and flee on foot towards
the Allendale Apartments. Other responding Newark officers apprehended Scott on
Rustic Drive in Brookbend. A search of the area of the F150 at the collision
scene revealed a loaded 9mm handgun and a quantity of marijuana.
A 63-year-old female was driving the Toyota Solara. She was
removed by ambulance to Christiana Hospital for possible minor injuries.
