[ARCHIVED] HUD Regional Administrator Joseph DeFelice Visits Newark

On Friday, October 25, Mayor Jerry Clifton welcomed Joseph DeFelice, Regional Manager for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), for a tour of properties managed by the Newark Housing Authority (NHA) and a conversation about affordable housing needs in the city. The group also discussed strategies for bringing governments, non-profits and private sector businesses together to service individuals in need.


Mayor Clifton, City Manager Coleman, Regional Manager DeFelice and members of his team visited properties throughout the city and planned ways to increase the number of units available to low-income families, individuals with disabilities and senior citizens. Additionally, the group discussed collaboration opportunities to provide job and skills training, health and wellness coaching and leadership development in order to help NHA residents achieve self-sufficiency.


"We have a responsibility to make Newark inclusive and diverse in its housing opportunities that aligns with the community's goals," said Mayor Clifton. "I'm grateful for the time spent with Regional Manager DeFelice who recognizes the city's challenges and is excited to strengthen partnerships between HUD and the city to better support our residents."


The mission of the Newark Housing Authority is to provide safe, decent and sanitary housing for very low to moderate income families, the elderly and persons with disabilities. Newark Housing Authority will manage resources efficiently, consistent with the highest ethical standards and free from discrimination. Newark Housing Authority will seek to empower residents and clients to reach self-sufficiency and make the transition to non-subsidized housing.


Appointed by President Donald Trump, Joseph J. DeFelice is the Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Region III which includes the Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. In this role, Joe works with others to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. He is responsible for the oversight of a $39.1-billion-dollar portfolio of programs and services and nearly 500 employees.
