City of Newark Crews Assessing Storm Damage

As a result of the severe storm that began at approximately 9:36 a.m. today, the City of Newark deployed Public Works and Water Resources crews to survey damage in the area. A significant amount of rain fell in a short period of time, which resulted in flash flooding in many flood-prone areas. Wind gusts were predicted of up to 70mph which may have caused additional damage. City crews are evaluating the situation and prioritizing work based on severity.

To stay safe during a flood, follow the safety tips below:

  • Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters.
  • Stay off of bridges and fast-moving water.
  • Determine how to best protect yourself based on the type of flooding:

    • Evacuate if instructed to do so
    • Move to higher ground or higher floor
    • Stay where you are

To stay safe during a tornado, follow the safety tips below:

  • If you can safely get to a sturdy building, do so immediately
  • Go to a safe room, basement or storm cellar
  • Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls
  • Do not get under an overpass or bridge
  • Stay alert for flying debris and use your arms to protect your neck and head
