June 25th: Welcome Back to Main Street

Newark Mayor Jerry Clifton, Governor John Carney, DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan, members of the General Assembly and representatives from The Newark Partnership and the business community will cut a ribbon to commemorate the end of construction on Main Street, which began in May 2019. Beginning at 4:00, Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic from Chapel Street to South College Avenue for a family-friendly evening to welcome guests back to Main Street.

From 4:00 until 9:00, downtown Newark restaurants and retailers will extend their seating to the roadway to accommodate larger crowds while maintaining a minimum of six-foot social distancing. Free parking will be available in Newark municipal lots 1, 4, 6 and 7 as well as the University of Delaware Trabant Garage and Lang Development lots located behind Bing’s Bakery, Taverna, Pomeroy Station and Burger King.

"Main Street looks better than ever and we’re thrilled the improvements are complete," said Mayor Clifton. "We hope Delawareans come out to support our businesses who have given back so much to their community despite the challenges they’ve faced over the last several months."
