[ARCHIVED] City Council Approves Creation of Diversity and Inclusion Commission

City Council voted unanimously to establish the Diversity and Inclusion Commission at the April 26th meeting and is seeking seven individuals to fill at-large appointments. Interested individuals should reside within the City or have a connection to Newark as an employee of a Newark business or as a student. Individuals with unique knowledge or skills on the subject of diversity may also be considered.

The goal of the Commission is to recommend strategies to achieve Newark's vision to be an inclusive community that embraces diversity and supports different lifestyles by encouraging cooperation, tolerance and respect among all that live, work, receive an education and do business in the City. Members will be a liaison to City Council and hear complaints about equity and inclusion and make recommendations to resolve those issues. Additionally, the seven members will help build relationships with under-served communities and help to reduce or remove barriers to improve access to municipal services.

"Newark is proud to be an inclusive community, but we recognize there is room for improvement," said Mayor Jerry Clifton. "I appreciate the time and effort put into the creation of this commission and Council is excited to consider applications for appointments."

In addition to the Diversity and Inclusion Commission, Council seeks applicants for the newly-formed Redistricting Committee and Board of Ethics, as well as other vacancies. For a complete list of opportunities, an application or more information about the boards and commissions, please visit our website or contact the City Secretary’s Office at citysecretary@newark.de.us or 302-366-7000.
