In recent years, proposed land-use projects in the downtown area of Newark have raised questions about building height, scale, density, configurations and parking. To address these concerns, members of City Council requested a review of the BB (Central Business) and RA (Multi-family High Rise) zoning districts. To ensure any revisions reflect the thoughts and needs of the community, the Planning and Development Department has partnered with a consultant to host Newark Charrette: Planning our Downtown Together. A charrette is a multi-day meeting where stakeholders and citizens collaborate to draft planning or design solutions.
From March 21-25, the charrette team will host daily meetings and online conversations to explain development issues and opportunities in the downtown district, share ideas on redevelopment, listen to feedback from community participants, and, finally, use the information gathered over the week to create a presentation that includes the summary of the findings for the charrette as well as an outline of the main ideas of potential revisions to the BB and RA zoning codes.
