2023 City Council Election Canceled

election update

The City of Newark municipal election scheduled for April 11, 2023 was uncontested and has been canceled. Councilmembers John Suchanec, Corinth Ford and Dwendolyn Creecy secured an additional term in Districts 1, 2 and 4 respectively.

A solicitation for candidates was advertised in The News Journal, Newark Post, on the City of Newark website and social media, via community newsletters and press release.

Section 10-19 of the City Code provides that if there is only one candidate for office, the Election Board shall declare the candidate elected and no formal election for that office shall be held. The Election Board will meet on April 13 to officially certify results and the Council organization meeting, which will include a swearing-in ceremony for Districts 1, 2 and 4, will be held on April 20.
