The City of Newark Electric Department is celebrating Public Power Week (#PublicPowerWeek) beginning October 1. Newark joins more than 2,000 other community-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities that collectively provide electricity to 49 million Americans.
"Public Power Week celebrates the community-owned electric that the City of Newark provides its residents," said Tom Coleman, Newark City Manager. "We're proud to emphasize the advantages of locally owned power to our customers."
Newark's Electric Department has 24 employees responsible for the operation of 175 miles of electric lines and maintains nine substation sites. It serves 11,586 residential customers and 1,655 commercial and industrial customers.
"Our service is reliable and safe, and we take pride in serving our neighbors and friends," said Bhadresh Patel, Director of Electric. "It is our honor to have served the City of Newark for more than 130 years."
