The City’s 2017 Street Improvement Program includes functional and structural repaving of 22 Newark streets segments consisting of curb replacement, catch basin repair, ADA curb ramp installation, milling, hot mix patching and resurfacing. Academy Street will be the first of the 22 streets repaired as part of this year’s contract. The Academy Street improvements will be completed in two sections (north and south).
The improvements on the north end will begin approximately 300 linear feet south of the Lovett Avenue intersection and will terminate at the south entrance of Alison Hall parking lot. Work is planned to begin on the north end of Academy Street on or around July 17, 2017 and is estimated to take approximately 2 weeks to complete. The northern improvement area will be open to essential local traffic only. See the attached North Academy Street exhibit for extents of the specific work area and detour routes.
The improvements on the south end of Academy includes the area just south of the Perkins Center Garage and terminates at the Academy Street and Park Place intersection. The work on the south end of Academy Street is estimated to begin on or around July 31, 2017 and is expected to take approximately 3 weeks. The south section of Academy will includes a full depth restoration of the road and will require the road be closed to both thru traffic and local traffic.
