The Parks and Recreation Department is continuously in search of recreation leaders and instructors with special skills and interests, as well as seasonal park maintenance and horticulture personnel. The department offers part-time, temporary employment opportunities in a wide variety of program areas.

We are currently accepting applications for these positions:

  • Seasonal Park Land Steward
    • Newark Department of Parks and Recreation is offering seven paid opportunities to gain hands on experience in Park Land Stewardship and Lawn Care Professional Training. Park Land Stewards will work and receive hands-on training from experienced and industry certified professionals in the following trade skills including equipment operations, contractor skills training, natural lands maintenance and sports and recreation field maintenance. The work requires strenuous effort such as the lifting and handling of light to moderately heavy materials and equipment, walking or climbing in outdoor areas. Flexible work schedule, 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Pay rate is $15 - $16 dependent upon experience.
  • Before and After School Care Staff
    • The City of Newark Parks & Recreation Department is looking to hire individuals to work in our before and after school care programs held each school day at Downes and West Park Elementary Schools in Newark. Responsibilities include providing care for before and after care of children (grades K-5) in a variety of activities. Before care hours are 6:45-8:15 a.m. and after care hours are 2:30-6:00 p.m. Flexible schedules available. Starting rate for qualified applicants is $15.00 per hour.   • Summer Camp Counselor
    • (June - August)
      Summer camp counselors provide leadership and supervision for camp participants ages 6 – 12 in various settings. Full Day and Half Day camps available. Previous experience working with school age children a plus. Must be prompt, reliable and dependable.
  • Lifeguards
    • (Year Round)
      Lifeguards provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere at a community swimming pool while swim lessons are being administered.  Enforce all departmental and pool policies and procedures while maintaining a clean and organized pool area. Must have Red Cross lifeguard certification, CPR, and first aid certification.
  • Swim Instructors
    • (Year Round) 
      Swim instructors teach primary water safety skills and stroke development for toddler through adults at both indoor and outdoor locations. Should have prior swim lesson instruction experience, Red Cross WSI certification preferred. Previous swim team swimmers interested in gaining teaching experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered.
  • Tennis Instructor
    • (September - October)
      Instruct adults and youth with levels ranging from 2.5 to 3.5
  • Gymnasium Supervisors
    • (October - March)
      Supervise gymnasium areas while scheduled activities are taking place and enforce rules and policies from Monday to Saturday.
  • Soccer Instructor
    • (September - March)
      Basic knowledge of soccer skills for youth instruction.  Individuals must be enthusiastic.
  • Basketball Referees
    • (November - March)
      Playing experience a must; officiating a plus. Individuals must be prompt, reliable, and dependable.
  • Basketball Instructor
    • (September - March)
      Basic Knowledge of basketball skills for youth instruction required. Individuals must be enthusiastic.
