The City of Newark’s Department of Planning and Development has officially launched the process to update its Comprehensive Development Plan, a long-range blueprint that will guide the City’s growth and development over the next decade.
The Comprehensive Development Plan (often called a “Comp Plan”) is more than just a policy document – it is a vision for Newark’s future. Covering topics such as land use, housing, transportation, economic development, sustainability, and natural resources, the plan reflects the shared values and priorities of the community and informs decisions about land use, services, and investments.
“Comp Plans shape everyday life in ways that residents may not always notice,” said Tom Coleman, City Manager. “From where new homes and businesses can be built, to how easy it is to walk or bike across town, to how we protect our natural resources – the plan impacts the quality of life for everyone in Newark.”
Public Engagement Opportunities
The planning process is highly participatory, and community involvement is essential to its success. The City of Newark is committed to making it simple for residents to share their voices through both in-person events and new digital tools using an online engagement platform called PublicInput. Through the platform, residents can:
- Learn about the goals, background, and milestones of the Comprehensive Plan update.
- Provide input through surveys, polls, and comment tools in real time.
- Stay connected by signing up for updates on public meetings and workshops.
- Engage on their own schedules, from any device, without needing to attend in person.
This blended approach of in-person events and digital tools will help ensure that the voices of a wide cross-section of Newark residents are heard.
Get Involved
Over the coming months, residents will have multiple opportunities to share input through meetings, workshops, surveys, and online engagement. Big questions to be addressed include:
- What is the community's vision for the future of housing?
- How can we improve walking, biking, and transit options?
- What’s most important to protect and preserve for future generations?
“This is the community’s chance to shape Newark’s future,” Coleman said. “The plan only works if it reflects the voices, values, and priorities of our residents.”
