Seasonal Collections and Services

From the first week of March to the first week of December, the city collects yard waste on what is commonly called Green Wednesdays.  During the winter months, when city-wide collection is discontinued, residents may call Public Works and schedule their yard waste cart be emptied on an upcoming Wednesday. Like household trash and recycling, yard waste must be placed in a city-provided cart (green with brown/tan lid) for automated curbside collection. But on weeks that include a holiday, Wednesdays are needed for household trash or recycling collections.  Therefore, there is no Green Wednesday yard waste collection during a holiday week.

Fall Leaf Collection Social Media Graphic
The City of Newark provides fallen leaf collection in the spring and in the fall. While the spring collection is brief, typically scheduled the last two weeks in March, the fall collection begins on the second Monday of October and continues through the end of December.

In order to improve the service, neighborhoods will no longer
have assigned days of the week for collection.  Instead, trucks will continuously route through the city during the season.  Residents are encouraged to rake leaves into piles (no bagging) to the grassy area between the sidewalk and curb at their convenience. Residents should expect collection once per week during the beginning of the season and once every other week during peak season.

Christmas-Tree-CollectionBeginning the first Tuesday following Christmas, and continuing each Tuesday through the month of January, the city will pick up Christmas trees at residents' curbs.  Please put your bare Christmas tree at the curb by 7am on Tuesday morning and the chipper truck will collect it either Tuesday or Wednesday.  There is no need to call to schedule a Christmas tree collection.  If you need to dispose of your tree in February or later, please click here for yard waste drop-off sites in New Castle County.
