Newark’s Renewable Energy Program

1. What is renewable energy?: Renewable energy, often referred to as “clean energy”, comes from natural sources or processes that are continuously replenished. Sunlight and wind are examples of renewable energy.

2. Is the program expensive?: Renewable energy is slightly more expensive than traditional electricity so our participating residents will be responsible for paying the difference. The additional fee will be $0.015 per kilowatt-hour. The average account will pay $15 per month more for renewable energy, but rates are adjusted annually and can change.

3. What are the advantages of enrolling in Newark’s Renewable Energy Program?: By purchasing a unit – or renewable energy credit (REC) - customers help ensure 1,000 kWh of renewable energy is delivered to the grid, which increases the competitiveness of clean energy resources compared to fossil fuels. The program is an easy solution for businesses or residents who are interested in supporting renewable energy development but do not wish to have solar arrays of their own.

5. Are the RECs certified?: Yes, the RECs are certified. Certification ensures that each REC is only issued once for the megawatt-hour of electricity generated by a specific facility. The REC supplier also undergoes an annual audit of its REC transactions.

6. Can I change my mind after I opt-in?: Yes, participation is completely optional. To opt-out of the service complete the "opt-out" form and submit to PaymentsandUtilityBilling@newark.de.us
