January 17, 2018 – Newark Police Department is investigating
a theft that occurred on 1/16/2018 at 11:54p.m. on the porch of The Deer Park
Tavern, 108 W. Main Street. The victim, a 31 year old male University of
Delaware student, reported that he was on the porch when he was approached by a
subject who asked him for money. Due to a language barrier, the victim
was unsure why the suspect was asking him for money. The victim removed
his wallet from his pocket and the suspect grabbed it out of his hand and
fled. The suspect was seen entering a red passenger car, which was parked
in front of The Deer Park Tavern and left westbound on W. Main Street.
The suspect was described as a black male, thin build,
wearing a black jacket, jeans, and black and white shoes. The suspect
fled in a red passenger vehicle with two additional occupants in it, one of
whom was a white female with blonde hair. A still surveillance image of
the suspect vehicle is included with this release.
This incident was the subject of a University of Delaware
Alert that was sent out on 1/17/18 just after 1a.m. The alert mistakenly
stated that the suspect said he was armed with a handgun and that it was a
robbery.
