Arrests Made In Baseball Bat Assault

June 20, 2018 - On Tuesday June 19, 2018 at approximately 12:04 a.m. the Newark Police responded to the DART Bus Hub located at 250 East Delaware Avenue for a report of an assault with a baseball bat involved. Officers located a 61-year-old female from Middletown at Newark Emergency Care suffering from a laceration to the right side of her head.


The victim was at the bus hub when a male and a female approached her. A verbal argument ensued and the female suspect pushed the victim to the ground. The female suspect then retrieved a metal baseball bat from a bag and struck the victim in the right side of the head. The male suspect then kicked the victim in the stomach multiple times and displayed a knife towards her. The suspects then fled the area.


The victim was transferred from Newark Emergency Care to Christiana Hospital for treatment of the injuries. Investigating Officers reviewed surveillance footage from the area and immediately recognized the two suspects from numerous encounters as 20-year-old Mary Beers of Newark and 21-year-old Miguiel Miranda of Wilmington. Officers obtained arrest warrants for the two suspects, who were located and taken into custody on East Main Street at approximately 3:21 p.m. on June 19th.


Charges for both defendants:

Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony

Assault 2nd Degree

Reckless Endangering First Degree

Aggravated Menacing

Offensive Touching

Conspiracy 2nd Degree


Miguiel Miranda was arraigned through Justice of the Peace Court #2 and was transported to Howard R. Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $79,250 secured bail. Mary Beers was also arraigned through Justice of the Peace Court #2 and was transported to Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in lieu of $32,500 secured bail.
