Incident Type: Accidental Discharge of a Firearm with Injury
Location: Unit block Thorn Lane, Newark
On 6/29/17 at 6:43 PM, a male subject was inside his residence, attempting to connect an accessory to a semi-automatic handgun. The subject reported that he removed the magazine and believed the weapon to be unloaded while connecting the accessory. While doing so, the weapon discharged, striking himself in the leg. The subject called 911 and stated he had accidentally shot himself while cleaning the weapon. When Newark Police officers arrived, the victim was located inside the apartment with no other persons present. The subject was transported to Christiana Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury. Newark Police Detectives are currently investigating the incident, however, at this time, no foul play is suspected, and no charges have been filed. The bullet was recovered in its entirety, within the victim’s residence.
