Intern 2024

The Newark Police Department offers a paid internship program which allows college students to gain valuable insight and experience in law enforcement. The internship schedule is flexible to work around an intern's class schedule. Interns may work an average of up to 15 hours per week.

General Description

The following are some duties and responsibilities of a police intern:

  1. Observe all areas of the police department's operations, including:
    • Patrol
    • Traffic
    • Criminal Investigations
    • Evidence
    • Victim Services
    • and more
  2. Ride-alongs with police officers on patrol
  3. Observing the 911 dispatch center
  4. On-the-job training includes administrative and field experience
  5. Work in Administration Division updating records systems
  6. Access DELJIS databases to update crime analysis and intelligence information
  7. Research projects as assigned 
  8. Other administrative tasks

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age
  • Currently enrolled at least part-time in college, but reception of college credit is not required
  • Ability to obtain DELJIS certification and pass a background check
